Borrowing items from the Library

To borrow books bring them with your student card to the Library desk.

Watch the 90 second video below or find step-by step instructions for borrowing books underneath.

How to borrow books from MIE Library step-by-step instructions

1. Find the Library Catalogue online by going to the Library homepage from any computer/device and clicking on 'Print Catalogue.'

Search it by entering keywords for a basic search, or you can search within specific collections by selecting advanced search from the drop-down menu:

2. Click on the title and you’ll see its availability and location code. If the book is available, take down the location code which will be made up of Collection (i.e. SL for short-loan or LL for long-loan, JFP for Junior Fiction Picture book etc., a number and some letters (the first three letters of the Author’s surname). You’ll need all of that information to find the book on the shelf. An example location code is LL 301.072/MCN. If it’s not available you can reserve a copy.

3. If your item is a normal long-loan book, go to the aisle in the Library with the range of numbers which contains the shelf-mark number you want (if not then look for signs in the Library for Junior Fiction, Short-loans, etc).

4. Break down the location code – first search for the number before the point. When you’ve found books that have that number then search along the shelf (and down to the next shelf) until you find books which have your whole number. Lastly within those books which have the matching number you must keep going along the shelf until you find the same letters too.

5. When you find the book, bring it to the desk with your student card. You will need your card to borrow books.
