Book Review

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (Available in MIE Library F/OWE)
"Go as far as you can–way out yonder where the crawdads sing."

A beautiful book about one girl’s survival in the marsh’s of the deep south in America. Left alone at a young age, she raised herself avoiding the townspeople who looked down on her calling her ‘The Marsh Girl’. Kya lived a solitary existence fending for herself by trading mussels with the local shopkeeper who along with his wife became lifelong friends. Her love for nature and her surroundings blossomed as she grew. She drew pictures of insects and plants that she found around her which were later published in book form. She became friends with Tate, a young boy from the town, who looks out for her and teaches her to read and write. He goes off to college and leaves Kya alone once again. The main plot centres around a murder of a local man with Kya as the chief suspect arrested for his murder and put on trial in the local courthouse judged by a jury of the townspeople. It was recently made into a movie which I would also recommend. It brings the characters and the story to life very beautifully and the star of the show is the cinematography of the marshes of North Carolina.
