Artists in Residence:

We are lucky to have some Artists in Residence currently in Marino.

Colm Ó Foghlú is a composer, writer, director and producer. He is a graduate of UCD holding a BA in Drama and Performance Studies and recently graduated from DCU’s St. Patrick’s College with a Professional Masters in Education where he was Artist in Residence from 2019-2021.  His new album Returning/Filleadh was released on the 27th October 2022.

Duffy Mooney-Shepard is a visual artist, storymaker and facilitator. She is a recent graduate of the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. As well as an artist, she is a qualified secondary school art teacher and has many years’ experience as a creative art workshop facilitator.

Darren Yorke is Duffy’s collaborator. Darren is a Dublin-based playmaker. He holds a BA in Drama and Theatre Studies from Trinity College Dublin and has developed a rich interdisciplinary arts practice with a strong focus on improvisational theatre or “Improv”.  Darren has strived to be a playmaker for the arts, in the spirit of Team sports.

Some of the highlights over the past few months include:

      • A Meet & Greet with the Artists in Residence at the MIE Student Showcase on 22nd September in the Nagle Rice Building.

      • Colm Ó Foghlú ran a Handbells Workshop on the 13th September.

      • As part of Culture Night on the 23rd September, MIE created a temporary installation. Colm Ó Foghlú shared a suite of compositions entitled 'The Island Lullaby' from his upcoming album to accompany a collection of work entitled An t-Oileánach by prominent Irish artist and printmaker Maria Simonds-Gooding which is housed at MIE. There are natural synergies between Colm and Maria's work, with both drawing inspiration from life on and the evacuation of the Blasket Islands.

      • We celebrated Harp Day on the 14th October with 'Planxty Lord Charlemont', written by MIE's artist-in-residence Colm Ó Foghlú and played for the first time by renowned harpist Noreen O'Donohue. The piece follows the Irish bardic tradition but incorporates Italianate baroque sequences alluding to James Caulfeild's Grand Tour and the years he spent in Rome. We were joined by other students and staff including Fionnuala Donlon (PME2), Breed Murphy, Máire Nuinseann and others, for some wonderful music.

      • A creative session was held on the 19th October for those interested in images and story making. There was a talk with Artist in Residence Duffy Mooney-Sheppard. These regular Wednesday sessions were an opportunity to share the picture books, writing and images that we love (or loathe!), play story making games and work together on creative projects during the year.

      • Story Hour, a story creating session/workshop (part talk/part workshop) facilitated by two of artists in residence, Duffy Mooney-Sheppard and Darren Yorke, was held on the 9th November in the Art Room. It was a casual session on creating stories about the objects around us to see how we can tap into imaginative storytelling. Also Darren shared about a fascinating and mysterious workshop series he is facilitating with children in Ballyfermot Library.

      • Winter Song - Colm Ó Foghlú, the drama society and the traditional music society hosted a Winter Concert on Tuesday 22nd November to kick off Christmas in the courtyard at 6pm.
