Green Campus initiative

The Sustainability Committee have been busy over the last few months. Here we highlight some of their Green Campus initiatives:

  • Check out the great job students and staff from the Green Campus team did on refurbishing the painted pencils outside St Patrick's building on the way to MIE Library.

  • Walktober
The Smarter Travel Campus Walktober Steps Challenge ran for the month of October.  MIE had 6 competing teams:
    - unprECEdented steps
    - Sustainability Steppers
    - Mo's Movers are back
    - BiblioTrekkers
    - The Tree Stooges
    - That's What I'm Walkin' About

Over 1,300 teams from all across the country took part in the challenge, and 3 of our teams finished within the top 600, which is a huge achievement.  Collectively, we walked

  • 1,409,834 steps
  • 1,007 km
  • from Dublin to Cologne!

MIE Library Team, the Bibliotrekkers, came in fourth. Everyone who took part received a lovely surprise gift.

    •
  • Light Up Your Life

As a TFI Smarter Travel Campus, MIE participated in the annual ‘Light Up Your Life’ promotional campaign throughout the month of November to support active commuting through the winter months, with a particular focus on bike safety.  With the shorter days, we are all often commuting in dark or low-light conditions. It’s important to be safe and be seen, to invest in hi-vis clothing and a good set of bicycle lights.  Throughout the month, they encouraged MIE cyclists to share their inspiring cycling stories and become ‘Cycle Champions’ and they encouraged everyone to have their say by completing the Student Travel Survey.

  • Campus Wormery

A wormery was set up on campus as part of the campus community garden. The BEd4 Space to Grow student team along with visiting consultant Craig Benton, put in a huge amount of work to prepare the wormery and make sure our worms will have a cosy and comfortable environment in which to thrive. Craig brought a whole kilo of tiger worms, which have now been introduced to their new home, and given their first meal of food scraps. Our worms will be busy converting our food waste to 'brown gold' - a nutrient-rich organic compost for our garden.

If you think you might like to help out, the Sustainability Committee are looking to form a small group of volunteers (staff and students) who will make sure that the food waste from the staff room and student space gets to the worms on a regular basis. The commitment required would generally be 15min once a week (shared among volunteers) - and you don't even have to touch the worms!  E-mail Sandra Austin at Sandra.Austin@mie.ie to register your interest.
